On this itinerary we will travel East to Afar territory with stops in Ankober, Langano and Awash.
The ride to Ankober is beautiful! Through windy roads and hilly terrain and the mountain pass of Kundi at 3,500m above sea level, which provides a breathtaking view over the Rift Valley. Ankober was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Shoa. Ankober’s heritage as an important historical site, the lodge enjoys a spectacular position overlooking the Great Rift Valley from 2,870m above sea level. As you get deeper into Afar territory you will ride through total wilderness.
The ride to Sheik Husein, southern Ethiopia’s most important annual Muslim pilgrimage site, lost in the desert plains of Bale province will be memorable. We will ride through the Bale Mountains settings and overnight in Goba, the capital of the Bale region lying at an alittude of 2,500 metres. This ride to one of the most beautiful and less visitied mountain ranges in Ethiopia will be more challenging but lots of fun!
Visit the Sof Umer Caves. Legend says that the caves go all the way till Yemen under the Red Sea. The ride is spectacular and on the way you may encounter some wild animals like the greater Kudu. We will camp in the camp site of Sof Umer. Be prepared for very wild camping.
Lake angano is the only swimable lake in Ethiopia and a major attraction for tourists and city-dwellers. If you are brave enough you may want to dare a very healthy cold dip in Lake Langano's mineral waters. Don't forget your swimming gear!
